Garran Primary is a leader as a sustainable and green school. Our sustainable journey continues with the whole school community involved in learning, developing lifelong sustainable practices and empowering students to become future leaders. The school has been acknowledged as a 5 Star Sustainable School, and staff are committed to sustainable approaches that encourage children to be engaged in learning about the environment and sustainability practices.

The school was awarded the ACT Sustainable School of the Year (ACTSMART) in 2018. This was a result of reducing the school’s ecological footprint through adopting sustainable practises in everyday learning programs and subsequently the lives of families and young children.

We achieved this by integrating sustainability into all areas of the curriculum and instilling a sense of ownership and pride in improving the environment with student led programs and initiatives. We lead the community by demonstrating exemplary practices in waste management, water and energy usage, and develop the school grounds to promote biodiversity. Student-elected Eco-Rangers participate in and build an awareness in other students of a range of practices including recycling, composting of food refuse and ‘nude food days’ to increase awareness of sustainability issues and encourage the students to be more responsible for the local and global environments.

A school masterplan has been developed with a focus on Nature Play being evident in our playground and is a blueprint for future outdoor learning spaces.
