Preschool

At Garran Preschool, a warm, caring and happy learning environment supports every child to develop and shine. Our educators believe in a play-based approach that caters to the uniqueness each child. Eager young explorers and thinkers thrive in a caring environment created for discovery, adventure and curiosity. The children delight in the real and the imagined.

Inspired by their authentic interests identified through interactions and play, the children are actively encouraged to discover the world around them in either planned or spontaneous engaging and open-ended investigations. All learning activities are designed to shape children’s developing sense of identity and place. This is in line with the intentions of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF): belonging, being and becoming.

Preschool is the first step into a broader educational environment and for some children it is often the first time away from home and family. The parent's role as their child’s first educator is respected and staff celebrate with parents and carers the learning, achievements and strengths of children. To help your child settle happily into their new surroundings, it is important that you maintain a close link with the preschool and take time to meet the teacher and staff who lead learning.

The school is proud of the exceptional learning provided in the preschool and has a National Quality Framework rating of ‘Exceeding’. The program offers 15 hours of preschool for children turning four before the end of April of the year of enrolment. Preschool is provided for all four year old children in the year before they attend school. Children must turn four by the 30th April to be eligible to attend.

Preschool placement at Garran 2021

Preschool places are not allocated on a first come first served basis. First consideration is given to siblings of students concurrently enrolled in the primary school and any compelling cases of exceptional circumstances. After that, children within the priority enrolment area will be allocated to the preschool that is closest to where they live that has capacity to enrol them, which may not necessarily be their closest preschool. If there are more applications from siblings of current students than places available, places will be allocated to those siblings who live closest to the school. This has been the case for a number of years with high demand for our preschool placement at Garran. In previous years, not all families with siblings at Garran have been able to be accommodated at Garran Preschool and have been offered other local options.

For further information, please call the Enrolments call back service on (02) 6205 5429. As has been the case previously, every four year old ACT child is guaranteed a place in a public preschool but not necessarily at the preschool that is closest to where the family resides or where siblings attend.
